There are four basic things that are very important to know when working with valves. It does not matter if you are in the manufacturing process, Distribution channels or an end-user or a service & repair provider. These four things will be crucial and will make your life so much easier when you know these things when you are working on or with valves.
• Knowledge about the Valve Fundamental Theory
• Knowledge about the Valve Technology
• Knowledge about the process application and control objectives
• Focused Marketing and Selective Selling
I have been in the Control Valve industry since 1993 and had an opportunity to study Instrumentation and Automation and worked at a petrochemical plant for a few years prior to my life in the Valve industry. I then jumped the fence from end-user to supplier, service and repairer and joined a Control valve company importing and selling Control Valves and Regulators and have been in the industry ever since.
This is where I have learned from one of the best Valve experts in the industry in South Africa at the time, that if you don’t focus you will not know valves all that good. There are too many Valve businesses that must expand their product range into selling instrumentation products with control valve and related valve products to make it or at least survive the up’s and downs. Or even worse Instrumentation companies that venture into adding Valve product in their product line. Yes, I know Emerson and GE and other corporate companies got it right to sell both valves and instrumentation but we have to remember that they have business units within the company which only focus on the specific technology may it be instrumentation, automation or valves.
Although the above scenario is not impossible from experience it is not that simple because people tend to take the road of least resistance and that is to gravitate and love to work with the things that comes easy, sell easy and are easy to understand and maintain. The bottom line is everybody wants a bottom line, every Manufacturer, Distributor, end user or service and Repairer wants to make or save money. And all companies’ staff will focus on what makes up the numbers.
To Bridge the gap, we at A VALVE COMPANY decided to educate your staff which are involved with the day to day dealings in the valve industry in the valve fundamentals. First this will give them the ability to FOCUS their attention to that which seems to be unknown and foreign, and being more and more confident and comfortable with valves and it’s operation. It is like teaching or improving your valve staff’s new language and the only way to do that is to use it daily. If you don’t use it, you lose it! So, one of our objectives is to shadow your staff instead of them shadowing you. It free up your time or your more experienced staff to work on the bottom line and do what is important, not taking unnecessary time to train the newcomers or less confident persons to the Valve industry.
At A VALVE COMPANY we make a point into differentiating between the PRODUCT vs TECHNOLOGY since many times you are using a specific valve product or you are limited in the products available but it might not be the correct technology for the application and in the long run it will have a very low ROI but it is what you have to work with. The problem with a focus on the Product is that you end up having the incorrect technology in the application to solve the objective. If you focus on the Right-Best technology first for the application, you tend can solve valve application much easier with a much higher ROI.
When it comes to valves it is all about UNDERSTANDING the valve’s main objective since it is the Final Control Element. And the person involved with valves need to ask themselves or get behind the main objective and the only way to do that is to be able to ask the right questions. Small technical issues like controlling the steam pressure instead of controlling the temperature to reach the same objective. When the data is gathered and the technology is determined the chance are that you will most probably have the right-best solution for the application.
